Gambling

i like the idea of gambling. i think it's important that we can gamble each other somewhere but i don't like the idea that every saloon can just "connect" with a central server. there's nothing "wild west about that." Nor do I like the idea of every town having its own gambling.

I think a separate casino building on the map, maybe one per map square but that you can only get there by train and this takes the same time from every town in that square (not sure how long, that can be debated, my vote would be 1 hour). (lets also say its owned by indians)
So for your town to be able to go there you have to construct an expensive "casino train" that requires town hall level 8 or 10 or something.

That way you have to put some effort into getting there and we can be sure to be playing each other, not just a computer program.

good?

I like the idea of adding gambling into the game but i don't see it as being added to the degree that some have stated. I think adding any type of *live* interaction between players would cause a complete rewrite in how other aspects of the game work.

I feel in order to add gambling to the game it needs to be setup akin to other aspects of the game to keep synergy and balance.

My idea would be to create a Gambling hall building that can be built in any town. In this building ANY player can play a game (aka, work a job). These "games" work exactly like jobs (difficulty, wage, XP, luck, etc.)
Each level of Gambling hall provides an additional game (aka, job) that can be played. Games increase in difficulty, wage, etc as the level of the building gets higher. Lastly, the amount you can lose in a game (determined by danger) is always double or more than the wage and it always results in lost money.

To put all of that into an example:

Gambling Hall - Level 1
Game - Poker
(Wage = 10%; XP = 6%; Luck = 3%; Danger = 20%)
Used skill points:
Reflexes, Setting traps, Fine motor skills, Tactics, Appearance
Difficulty = 20

At level 2, the percentages all go up by X amount and the difficulty raises for Poker. Also, a new game is added in the building:

Game - Billiards
(Wage = 18%; XP = 8%; Luck = 5%; Danger = 32%)
Used skill points:
Stamina, Reflexes, Fine motor skills, Tactics x2
Difficulty = 35

Of course, this method of thinking completely eliminates tournaments, live interaction with other players so it may not be something even worth implementing.

It's actually a really good idea, especially if you can lose money in your bank. What happens if you lose more than you have though? i guess it need to be based on a % of what you have.
So basically it's just jobs where the 'danger' is losing money rather than health. I guess the equivalent of getting koed would be to end up in debtors' prison for 48 hours - if we ever get such a thing.
I have some ideas about how this could be implemented.
However, like yourself, i'd rather have real gambling.

Yeah, your money in the bank won't be safe. I figured the losses could be taken out just like if you purchased an item. I don't like the idea of going into debt or negatives (we don't go into negative health when KO'd).
Now if your cheapest item(s) automatically got sold to pay off the loss, that would be funny.
