Nope . I don't think it came to that use until the industrial revolution , by then We had taken the Mother tounge down a quite divergent path .

Now You're reminding Me of a chap I met in Italia , with one of those pocket translators . He typed in the word "medium" for a translation to his native tounge and was entirely freaked out by the thiryfive or so possible meanings that appeared .
